Feb 23, 2016 To commemorate her achievements, there’s a ride that you may or may not have heard of that’s happening for the 3rd year in a row. The Bessie Stringfield All Female Ride is taking place June 22-26, 2016 from Birmingham, AL to Miami, FL. Our friends over at Black Girls Ride Magazine have all the details in addition to a pre-ride orientation hosted by SeCCRet the Cross Country Rider.
If you don’t know who Bessie is, she was the first African-American woman to ride across the country on a motorcycle in the 1930s/1940s (among other achievements). It was challenging enough to be a woman rider back then, but imagine the added difficulty of riding through not so friendly regions of the country simply due to the color of your skin.
That couldn’t have been easy and I don’t want to imagine the way she might’ve been treated and spoken to. From what I’ve read about her, she had an amazing spirit and courageous attitude. She’s an inspiration to all of us. You can read a snippet of her amazing story over at the AMA Hall of Fame website.
